The Collapse of Barings Bank

Abstract: A 6 page paper discussing some the events and activities of Nick Leeson, which culminated in the collapse of a 232-year-old investment bank. Trading in financial markets is more common now as the global economy continues to expand, and derivatives trading can be an important component of any organization's international risk management. However, it is critical that sufficient accountability measures be in place and that accounting procedures and ethics have full reign so that managers are no longer able to post liabilities as assets or debts as equity, as has been possible in the past.
