Can an Imperialist Power Promote Democracy?

Abstract: This 5 page paper considers this question: "Is the United States of America, an imperial power promoting democracy and capitalism to the rest of the world?" This is actually four questions in one: is the U.S. an imperialist state? Can an imperialist state "promote" democracy and capitalism; that is, can it force other nations to accept an ideology?
