Abstract: A 7 page essay/research paper that discusses, first of all, the centrality of language to cognitive processes, arguing that language forms, specifically "proto-metaphors," incline the language user toward perceiving reality in pre-determined ways. Then, broadening the discussion to include rhetoric, the relationships between language, thought and rhetoric are examined, specifically exploring how rhetoric relates to both language and thought, and argues that historical concepts of rhetoric are too limiting because they focus, for the most part, only on the orator and do not give equal weight to how the auditor perceives the orator's message.
