Gibbon/Vindication

Abstract: A 10 page research paper that discusses the reaction that Edward Gibbon's famous history Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire received when it was published in the late eighteenth century. The reaction was so strong against chapters 15 and 16 in the first volume of Gibbon's history that he subsequently wrote a book that was entitled a vindication of these chapters. The writer discusses the criticism and Gibbon's replay via his Vindication. Bibliography lists 1 source.
