Abstract: This 5 page paper considers the portrayal of the past, present and future of the United States presented in the film the Deer Hunter and commentated on by Gilbert Adair in his book Hollywood's Vietnam. The paper discusses the reality, the rhetoric and the symbolism of this idea of the past and the future of the United States arguing that the film tells us more about America and Hollywood than it does Vietnam.
