The Value of Biodiversity

Abstract: A 5 page paper examining whether the US should be committed to preserving individual plant and animal species. Preservation of individual species absolutely is a worthy pursuit to which the US should dedicate itself. The current system is much too adversarial, pitting the "tree huggers" against the interests of the capitalist base that has kept the country in the longest period of economic expansion it has ever known. Economists have placed the value of the entire world ecosystem at an average of $33 trillion annually; assessing proposed actions in terms of dollar amounts could be useful in providing a frame of reference that policymakers and non-scientists currently do not have.
