Matthew Arnold: Views On Hebraism And Hellenism In Relation To Western History

Abstract: 5 pages in length. It can be argued that along with his mentor Socrates, Matthew Arnold virtually set the stage for effective perception of Hebraism and Hellenism. These European cultures came to represent various depictions to Arnold, whose own personal quest was to seek out the inherent values of Hellenism, a concept that revolved around reason, the pursuit of knowledge and the arts, moderation, civic responsibility and bodily development. Hebraism, on the other hand, stood for a moral theory or emphasis that was attributed to the Hebrews. In his interpretation of both cultures, Arnold considered them as harboring a dual historical heritage.
