The Media as Today's Locus of the Public Sphere

Abstract: A 6 page paper discussing the role the mass media has come to fill. Whereas the town hall and other public meeting places formerly were the centers of the public sphere in which public opinion was formed and solidified, that center has shifted today to the mass media. The paper discusses reports of opposition demonstrations to the World Economic Forum held in Australia as example, using the example to demonstrate the media's ability to influence public opinion in Australia's telecommunications and information policies.
