Abstract: A 5 page paper discussing the operation of the stock market - where stocks come from, how investors can buy and sell them, and why investors want to buy an interest in stock-issuing corporations. The paper discusses the roles of the SEC, S&P 500, Dow-Jones Industrial Average and brokerage houses, as well as how market forces affect stock prices. An old rule of investing is to never invest more than you can afford to lose, and that rule is still valid today. The stock market can be lucrative for patient investors who make good decisions.
