Shareholder Wealth Creation by Way of Merger in the Telecommunications Sector

Abstract: This 40 page paper considers whether or not shareholder wealth can be created by acquisition and merger in telecom companies. The paper first considers what is actually meant by shareholder wealth, and how it might be measures. A literary review is included with evidence for and against the creation of shareholder wealth though mergers and acquisition. The general background to mergers in this market is examined with many cases cited to support the view that certain cases may create wealth whilst other will fail with further consideration given to the conditions which may be required for positive results to be achieved. The final part of the paper ;looks at a case study of NTL, a Untied Kingdom company that has followed an aggressive acquisitions strategy over the last few years. The bibliography cites 22 sources.
