Female Androgynous Adolescents: Better Self-Image Than Being Either Very Masculine Or Very Feminine Girls?

Abstract: 8 pages in length. When it comes to social acceptance, there exist some very strict guidelines: An individual is either male or female. Indeed, little room for approval is given for those who do not fall into one of these two confining categories, often forcing people to assume roles that abide by social dictates. Female adolescents are particularly susceptible to issues of androgyny as they relate to self-image and overall social acceptance. One can readily argue that those female adolescents who display androgynous tendencies do not, in fact, feel better about themselves than if they were either very masculine or very feminine girls, inasmuch society places much too much pressure for an individual to offer a clear and recognizable distinction between the two portrayals.
