The Speaking Picture in Poetry

Abstract: A 10 page paper which discusses how renaissance poetry has often been seen as a body of work which presents a speaking picture. Poetry is much like painting in that it attempts to portray one moment in time, or one moment of thought, into words. It paints a picture full of images that allows us to envision in our minds, what the poet sees, feels, and thinks. Literature, the other art form using language, cannot do this due to the fact that it focuses on a great number of events, people, and thoughts. The paper discusses considerations concerning this form of art, with the work of English poet Francis Quarles being the primary focus in relationship to speaking pictures. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
