Why Not Burn the Flag ?

Abstract: An 8 page argumentative report against allowing the burning of the American flag. In 1989, the Supreme Court overturned both the conviction of Gregory (Joey) Johnson and the laws under which he was convicted for burning a flag in Dallas during the 1984 Republican National Convention. The Supreme Court cited the Constitution's protection of free speech under the First Amendment, but astute authors (and citizens) noted that there was usually little, if any, speech involved in burning a flag. The position taken in the paper is that other avenues, including speech, are available for those unhappy with the state of the country. Bibliography lists numerous sources.
